September 2003 Call to Action:  Comments Needed
on Proposed Rules for New Boating and Water Use Regulations

The National Park Service (NPS) is proposing to revise rules that regulate boating and water use activities in areas administered by the NPS.

These new regulations, designed to cover the entire National Park System, would cause changes at Isle Royale National Park. Whether some of the regulations are appropriate or safe in the waters of Lake Superior around Isle Royale should be considered. For example, they would limit maximum speeds in quiet and no-wake zones to no more than 5 mph, even in rougher sea conditions where currently speeds greater than 5 mph are allowed.

The text of the proposed regulations has been duplicated here from the Federal Register website.

Comments must be received by December 24, 2003. Comments should be sent to Kym Hall, Special Assistant, National Park Service, 1849 C Street NW, Room 3145, Washington, DC 20240. Email: WASO_Regulations@nps.gov. Fax: (202) 208-4684.

Please review the proposed regulations and make your comments known. These regulations were last revised in 1983. It could well take another 20 years to correct any deficiencies in the proposed regulations.
